Phobias

Hypnosis for emetophobia

Loosen the fear of vomiting so it stops deciding where you go and what you eat.

Fear of Being Sick is a session for anyone whose day is shaped by where the toilets are and what feels safe to eat.

The practice spends its time turning down the alarm in the stomach so that nausea feels less urgent and less like a command. It works on the dread of the feeling rather than the feeling itself.

It is the notice on a restaurant door that stops you, or the thought of a long journey on a coach. You check the exits before you sit down and you avoid situations where a toilet might not be close.

The day becomes a series of careful decisions made to keep the risk at zero.

What’s in it

A much smaller fear and a life that stops shrinking around it.

Why do it

A few quiet minutes turn down the alarm, so the fear stops making your decisions for you.

Perfect use-case: Fear of Being Sick — hypnosis session

The fear runs the day exactly when the exits feel too far away or the food feels too unknown.

At the restaurant doorreading the menu for risk
Before a long coach journeymapping every toilet stop
Sunday lunchthe safe food list shrinking

What you’ll hear in the Fear of Being Sick session

The session treats the fear as an old alarm system that blares at the slightest sensation, and works by gradually turning the volume down so the feeling stops being a command to run.

You have lived for too long with a knot of fear dictating your choices, shrinking your world room by room

The constant scanning for exits, the careful selection of only the safest foods, that deep-seated dread of a simple bodily function

this cycle ends now

Your mind has been operating an old alarm system, one that blares its warning at the slightest sensation, but today you begin to recalibrate it

You are learning to turn down the volume on that internal panic, allowing the true calm of your own strength to emerge

Imagine that familiar tension in your stomach, the one you mistake for imminent danger

Right now, you can picture it as a tightly wound coil of rope, held rigid by a force of habit

As you focus on this image, you allow that rope to begin to unspool, slowly and deliberately

  • shrinking your world room by roomthe fear gradually narrows your choices — here it is named and slowed down
  • this cycle ends nowa change is framed as already happening, not as an instruction
  • picture it as a tightly wound coilthe anxious feeling gets a shape, so it can be worked with

Timeline: Start to Finish

The core of this session settles the stomach and lowers the alarm. It spends time on the feeling of safety, repeating the steps until the alarm stops making the decisions for you.

Why this works — and what the research actually says

Group-level, not session-level: no study has tested this exact session, and we will not pretend otherwise. Every source below was opened and read on 2026-08-25 before it was quoted.

Why do it as hypnosis?

Trying to argue with a fear that strong usually makes it worse. What quiets an alarm is having it heard and then staying in the room while nothing bad happens.

This spends time on the feeling itself, turning the volume down gradually so you can stay with the thought without having to run away.

Hypnosis and anxiety, measured

Worth knowing: The same analysis found hypnosis worked better as an addition to another psychological treatment than on its own. It is not evidence that hypnosis alone beats therapy.

The exact wording and figures

A meta-analysis of 17 trials found that at the end of treatment the average person receiving hypnosis reduced anxiety more than about 79% of control participants (weighted effect size 0.79).

At the longest follow-up, across seven trials, that rose to about 84% (effect size 0.99).

Fifteen studies and 17 trials, screened from 399 records, in the field's main peer-reviewed journal.

Three ways to say it

Same goal, written three ways: pick the voice you would believe when the alarm starts and the exits feel too far.

Balanced

Loosen the fear of vomiting so it stops deciding where you go and what you eat. The default.

Turns down the alarm gradually so the fear stops deciding where you go and what you eat.

Future self

Picture the version of you who is settled in your stomach and free to go where you like.

The version of you who sits down in a restaurant without scanning for the exit first.

New identity

Step into being settled in your stomach and free to go where you like, starting now.

Stepping into being someone whose stomach sensation is just information, not a crisis.

Questions people ask about Fear of Being Sick

Will this stop me from ever feeling nauseous?

No. Nausea is a normal bodily signal. The session works on the alarm that treats that signal as a catastrophe, not on the stomach itself.

What if I panic during the session?

You can open your eyes and stop at any point. The session turns the volume down gradually rather than forcing you to face the fear at full intensity.

How is this different from just telling myself it is fine?

Arguing with a fear this strong usually makes it louder. The session lets the alarm run while nothing bad happens, so the system stops treating the feeling as a command.

Do I have to believe hypnosis works for this to help?

No. The session uses the same repetition and pacing that quiet an alarm in everyday life. Belief is not required; willingness to sit and listen is.

Is it safe to use alongside exposure therapy?

It can be, but check with your therapist first. This session works on the dread of the feeling rather than the feeling itself, which may overlap or differ from your therapy's approach.

Before you press play

  • This one asks for a bit of care. In the app it opens with a consent step before anything plays.
  • Not the right session right now if any of these are live for you: eating difficulties under clinical care; severe phobia currently in therapy.

Hypnosis is not for everyone. If you have epilepsy, a psychotic illness, or you are under psychiatric care, talk to your clinician before using this — here or anywhere.
