Hypnosis for anxiety

Baseline calm. Anxious thoughts pass through without stopping.

General Anxiety is a self-hypnosis session for when the day starts fine but a small worry catches in your mind and loops.

The main focus is a long run of slow repetition that offers the nervous system a fresh beat to follow instead of the fast one it knows. This is a rehearsal of being grounded.

The day starts fine and then something small catches in your mind. A single question about the future or a mistake from the past starts looping, getting louder while you try to work.

You walk through the ordinary hours feeling tight, waiting for the next thing to go wrong, even when everything is actually fine.

What’s in it

A steadier baseline where anxious thoughts pass through instead of taking hold.

Why do it

Calm is a skill the nervous system learns by rehearsal, so each session makes the next one easier.

What you’ll hear in the General Anxiety session

Anxiety runs on a fast track the mind has no permission to stop. The session offers a slower rhythm instead, rehearsing the skill of noticing a worry without grasping it, so it passes through like a leaf on a stream.

Anxiety can feel like a constant, humming energy just beneath your skin, a fast track your mind runs on without your permission

Today you are choosing a different path, offering your nervous system the chance to learn a new, slower rhythm, one where calm becomes your familiar baseline

This is a skill you are rehearsing, and each moment of this practice makes the next moment of steadiness more accessible

You are training your mind and body to settle into a state of quiet confidence

That small worry that often catches you early in your day can now be noticed without gaining traction

You see it arrive, acknowledge its presence, and let it begin its journey onward without inviting it to stay

It is like watching a leaf float by on a stream; you observe its shape and colour, but you do not reach into the water to grasp it

  • a fast track your mind runs onnames the mechanical habit — the system default, not a personal failing
  • without inviting it to staythe key move: acknowledgement without engagement — a boundary, not a suppression
  • like watching a leaf float bya concrete image for detachment — the thought is seen but not reached for

Timeline: Start to Finish

This build is a rehearsal of steadiness in the body. The middle section spends its time repeating the sensation of being grounded, so the mind has something calm to return to.

Why this works — and what the research actually says

Group-level, not session-level: no study has tested this exact session, and we will not pretend otherwise. Every source below was opened and read on 2026-08-25 before it was quoted.

Why do it as hypnosis?

Trying to argue with a worried thought does not usually make it any quieter. The issue is often that the mind has no other rhythm to run on, so it keeps returning to the fast track it knows.

This provides a different pattern for the nervous system to follow, a long stretch of slow repetition that does not ask you to solve anything.

It is not a fix, but it is a chance for the system to settle out of the fast gear on its own.

Hypnosis and anxiety, measured

Worth knowing: The same analysis found hypnosis worked better as an addition to another psychological treatment than on its own. It is not evidence that hypnosis alone beats therapy.

The exact wording and figures

A meta-analysis of 17 trials found that at the end of treatment the average person receiving hypnosis reduced anxiety more than about 79% of control participants (weighted effect size 0.79).

At the longest follow-up, across seven trials, that rose to about 84% (effect size 0.99).

Fifteen studies and 17 trials, screened from 399 records, in the field's main peer-reviewed journal.

One trial, in numbers you can check

Worth knowing: The authors name their own weaknesses:

participants could not be blinded to which group they were in, and hypnotisability was never measured, so it is unknown whether the responders were simply the more hypnotisable people.

The exact wording and figures

In a multicentre randomised trial of group hypnosis for stress, self-rated stress after five weeks averaged 41.8 mm on a 100 mm scale in the hypnosis group against 62.9 mm in the control group - a difference of 21.2 mm (p < 0.001).

A single trial rather than a review, included because it reports a number a reader can hold on to and because its authors are unusually direct about its limits.

Three ways to say it

Same goal, written three ways: pick the voice you would believe when the worry catches and the day tightens.

Balanced

A warm, all-round session that settles the body and quiets the mind. The default.

Settles the body and quiets the mind with a warm, even repetition that lets the fast track drop on its own.

Future self

Picture your calmer self a week, a month, a year ahead and bring that steadiness back.

Pictures the you who already walks through the day without bracing, and brings that steadiness back.

New identity

Step into being a calm, grounded person now, not working toward it.

Steps into being someone whose default is grounded, not someone working toward calm.

Questions people ask about General Anxiety

Will this work if I am sceptical about hypnosis?

You do not have to believe in it. The session offers a slow rhythm your nervous system can follow; it does not require your agreement, just your attention to the words.

How is this different from just sitting quietly?

Sitting quietly still leaves the fast track running. The repetition here gives your system a new pattern to lock onto, a structure that quiet alone does not provide.

What if my mind is too anxious to focus on it?

The session is built for that state. It does not ask you to solve the worry or force calm; it repeats slowly enough that an agitated mind can still ride along.

Can I use this alongside medication for anxiety?

Yes, it is a rehearsal of a physical state, not a treatment. That said, it is not a substitute for medical care, and it will not replace what your doctor prescribed.

How long before I notice a change?

Most people feel the slower rhythm within the session itself. Carrying that baseline into the day takes rehearsal over several sessions; it is not immediate.

Where it sits

A lower idle for a mind that keeps scanning for the next thing.
