Mood & Disposition

Hypnosis for seasonal low mood

Meet the darker months with warmth and rhythm instead of dread.

This session is for the months when the light goes and the mood follows, bringing a heaviness that makes the day feel like a job.

It spends its time rehearsing a steady rhythm indoors, letting you sit with the dark without waiting for it to end. The aim is a warmer, quieter way of meeting the winter.

The light goes early and the mornings feel heavy in a way that makes no sense. You look out at the grey and feel the weight of the whole season before the day has started.

It is not just the cold that is difficult, but the loss of any rhythm that made the previous months feel manageable.

What’s in it

A steadier mood through the dark months and a kinder relationship with the season itself.

Why do it

A few quiet minutes reset the story about winter, so the shorter days feel less like something happening to you.

What you’ll hear in the Seasonal Low Mood session

The session suggests creating an internal sense of warmth and rhythm that is separate from the weather, so the season feels less like something that happens to you.

You notice the heaviness of the darker months affecting your mood and daily rhythm

And now you can begin to meet the winter season with a sense of internal warmth and steadiness

The shorter days no longer feel like something happening to you, but rather an invitation to find a different kind of light

This is a journey toward a steadier mood, a kinder relationship with the season itself

You are learning to create a sense of internal warmth that does not depend on the sky

This steadiness grows stronger with each breath you take

The grey sky no longer needs to dictate your internal state

You can feel a calm separation between the world outside and the world within you

This allows you to observe the weather without being washed away by it

Your inner world becomes a sanctuary, a place of constant warmth and gentle rhythm

  • meet the winter seasondirectly naming the thing to shift focus onto, not just away from
  • a kinder relationship with the seasonmeasured language — it's not fixed but it's not nothing either
  • a place of constant warmththe repeated words will stack up over weeks of listening

Timeline: Start to Finish

This build is structured to change the narrative you repeat about the winter months. The middle section spends its time rehearsing a sense of inner warmth that exists regardless of the weather outside.

Why this works — and what the research actually says

Group-level, not session-level: no study has tested this exact session, and we will not pretend otherwise. Every source below was opened and read on 2026-08-25 before it was quoted.

Why do it as hypnosis?

Telling yourself to cheer up is a poor tool against a change in the light.

This works by giving your mind a different pattern to rehearse while you are sitting still, specifically a sense of warmth and enoughness that does not depend on the sky.

It is not a fight against the season, but a way of letting the story about it run on a different track.

Does gratitude practice actually work?

Yes, a little — and there is now a very large answer to that question. Researchers pooled 145 studies covering nearly 25,000 people in 28 countries.

Gratitude practice produced a small but consistent lift in wellbeing. A real nudge, not a transformation.

  • 145 studies, 24,804 people, 28 countries
  • A small, consistent improvement in wellbeing
  • Not better than other deliberately positive activities

Worth knowing: The same analysis found gratitude interventions were not significantly different from other positively valenced activities.

So the gain may come from deliberately doing something positive, rather than from gratitude specifically.

The authors also note the search covered English-language studies only, found some evidence of small-sample and selection bias, and is limited to the 28 countries included.

The exact wording and figures

Pooling 145 papers, 163 samples and 727 effect sizes from 24,804 participants across 28 countries, gratitude interventions produced a small overall increase in well-being (Hedges' g = 0.19, 95% CI 0.15 to 0.22, P < 0.001).

A meta-analysis pools the results of many separate studies to find the overall pattern, which is why the numbers are small and the sample is huge.

What happened when it was tested as an app

A 2025 trial put a three-week gratitude app in front of university students, with five daily exercises including a guided meditation. For the average student it changed nothing measurable.

For the students who started out struggling, it made a clear difference.

  • 93 students, three weeks, five daily exercises
  • Across everyone: no measurable effect
  • Among those who began with moderate-to-severe symptoms: a clear improvement

Worth knowing: The authors are direct about the limits. The study "had a small sample size with a relatively homogenous sample population". Also, "study dropout in the gratitude intervention group was relatively high".

And "there was no long-term follow-up on well-being outcomes after the intervention".

The exact wording and figures

In a randomised controlled trial of a three-week app-based gratitude programme with 93 university students, there was no significant effect across the full sample (Cohen d = 0.16, P = .46).

In the subsample who began with moderate-to-severe symptoms (n = 56), the intervention group improved significantly (Cohen d = -0.68, P = .04).

One trial, not a body of evidence — and it tested a gratitude app, not this session.

Three ways to say it

Choose the voice that makes it feel possible to meet winter with a steady warmth inside you.

Balanced

Meet the darker months with warmth and rhythm instead of dread. The default.

A steady warmth and rhythm that makes the darker months feel manageable again.

Future self

Picture the version of you who is steady and warm in yourself whatever the season is doing.

You are already the person who is calm and warm, whatever the sky is doing.

New identity

Step into being steady and warm in yourself whatever the season is doing, starting now.

You step into the role of someone who finds comfort in the quiet season.

Questions people ask about Seasonal Low Mood

Does this work if I don't believe in hypnosis?

You don’t need to believe in it. The session works by guiding your focus towards a different way of thinking, which can help regardless of your beliefs.

How is this different from just listening to music?

Unlike music, this session actively guides your thoughts towards a steadier rhythm and warmth, helping you reframe how you feel about the darker months.

What if I fall asleep during it?

Drifting off is fine. The session is designed for relaxed listening, and you can always replay it when you’re more alert.

How long before I notice anything?

Some people feel a shift after one session, but it varies. It’s more about gradual change than immediate results.

Is this safe alongside my existing routine?

Yes, it’s safe to use alongside other routines. It’s designed to complement, not replace, your usual ways of managing mood.

Where it sits

The baseline you live at day to day, rather than any single crisis.

Before you press play

  • This one asks for a bit of care. In the app it opens with a consent step before anything plays.
  • Not the right session right now if any of these are live for you: persistent low mood lasting more than two weeks; clinical depression under treatment.

Hypnosis is not for everyone. If you have epilepsy, a psychotic illness, or you are under psychiatric care, talk to your clinician before using this — here or anywhere.
