Confidence & Self-Esteem

Hypnosis for assertiveness

Say what you mean, kindly and clearly.

This session rehearses a clear and kind way of speaking up, offering a middle path between silence and harshness.

It spends most of the time on specific lines for saying no or setting a boundary, repeating them until the sound feels ordinary. The aim is simply to practise the words in a quiet place first.

You catch yourself agreeing to things you do not want to do because a refusal seems likely to create conflict.

The resentment builds afterwards, or you spend the evening wishing you had spoken up and kept your mouth shut instead.

It is not that you lack the words, but that the moment to use them passes before you can catch it.

What’s in it

A clear, kind voice that says what you mean and holds a boundary without going harsh or going quiet.

Why do it

Assertiveness grows by being rehearsed, so a few minutes here makes the honest word feel natural when the real moment comes.

Perfect use-case: Assertiveness — hypnosis session

The automatic yes happens fastest when the cost of refusing feels immediate and personal.

Friday eveningthe phone lights up again
At the kitchen tablethe request already landing
Before hitting replythe favour already typed

What you’ll hear in the Assertiveness session

The session starts by naming the automatic yes as a pattern, then finds the small pause before it and turns you into an observer of that urge rather than someone swept away by it.

You often agree to things you do not want to do because saying no feels like starting a fight

You notice that familiar pattern, that automatic yes that escapes before you have a chance to think

That internal wish that you had spoken up is a powerful signal, a deep part of you that wants to express itself honestly and clearly

This feeling is not your enemy; it is your guidance, pointing you toward a more authentic and peaceful way of being in the world

Now you can begin to notice that moment just before you agree without thinking

There is a tiny space there, a fleeting pause between the request and your response

In that instant, you feel a subtle pull, an urge to just say yes to keep things smooth

And today, you become an observer of that urge, noticing it without being swept away by it

  • automatic yes that escapesnames the reflex so it becomes a thing you watch, not a thing you are
  • tiny space there, a fleeting pauselocates the gap between request and response — the place where choice becomes possible
  • observer of that urgeshifts your position from inside the impulse to outside it — classic dissociation

Timeline: Start to Finish

The rehearsal block works on the feeling of saying no. It lets you practice holding that boundary in a safe place so the honest word feels familiar when you need it.

Why this works — and what the research actually says

Group-level, not session-level: no study has tested this exact session, and we will not pretend otherwise. Every source below was opened and read on 2026-08-25 before it was quoted.

Why do it as hypnosis?

Finding the right words is rarely the problem when the pressure is on. The difficulty is that your body reacts before your mind can catch up.

This creates a quiet space where you can practice the feeling of holding a line while your pulse stays low. It does not change the other person, but it gives you a chance to rehearse the part where you stay steady.

Self-esteem: one good trial, in one specific group

Ninety-five women who had finished cancer treatment were randomly assigned either to eight weeks of group self-hypnosis and self-care, or to a waiting list.

Self-esteem rose in the hypnosis group and barely moved in the control group. It is a real result — and it is one study, in one population, where self-esteem was not the main thing being measured.

  • 95 women who had completed cancer treatment, eight weekly sessions
  • Self-esteem improved; the waiting-list group barely changed
  • A secondary outcome, in a specific group — not the general public

Worth knowing: Self-esteem was a secondary outcome, not what the trial was designed to test. The participants were cancer survivors and overwhelmingly women, an imbalance the authors flag as unexpected.

They also note that "other late measurement times could have been useful to investigate the long-term evolution".

The exact wording and figures

Ninety-five women who had completed cancer treatment were randomised to group self-hypnosis and self-care, or to a wait-list.

Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale scores rose from 29.63 to 31.83 in the hypnosis group (d = 0.46, p < .001). The wait-list control group showed negligible change (d = 0.16, p = .857).

Three ways to say it

Same goal, written three ways: pick the voice you would believe when the request lands and the old yes starts to rise.

Balanced

Find the clear, kind voice, the freedom to say no, and rehearse it until it feels natural. The default.

Finds and rehearses the clear, kind phrase until saying no sounds ordinary and your pulse stays low.

Future self

Picture the version of you who speaks up easily and holds a boundary with warmth.

Shows you the person who already speaks up easily, then lets you step into how that version feels.

New identity

Step into being someone who says what they mean, with nothing to prove and no one to please.

Installs the posture of someone who says what they mean with nothing to prove, so the words follow the stance.

Questions people ask about Assertiveness

Will this actually change how I act in the room?

It gives you a rehearsed pause and a phrase you have practised saying calmly. Whether you use it still depends on the moment. It lowers the barrier, it does not remove it.

Do I have to believe hypnosis works for this to help?

No. The session is mostly repetition of clear phrases in a relaxed state. If you simply follow the words and speak where prompted, the rehearsal does the work regardless of belief.

What if I fall asleep halfway through?

You miss the later rehearsal. The early parts still land, but the spoken practice of saying no while your pulse stays low is the core work, so stay awake for that if you can.

How is this different from just practising in front of a mirror?

Mirror practice is fully alert. This session drops your pulse first, then has you rehearse from that calm baseline, so the body learns the phrase belongs to a steady state, not a stressed one.

Is it safe to use alongside therapy for people-pleasing?

Yes, it is complementary rehearsal. But it is not therapy and does not address the origin of the pattern. If your therapist advises against relaxation work, follow their lead.

Where it sits

Walking in steadier, and how you speak to yourself when nobody is listening.

Before you press play

Hypnosis is not for everyone. If you have epilepsy, a psychotic illness, or you are under psychiatric care, talk to your clinician before using this — here or anywhere.
