Weight & Eating

Hypnosis for binge eating

Steady relationship with food in difficult moments.

This session is for the difficult moments that usually end with too much food, and it spends its time rehearsing a steadier response.

It asks you to pause and breathe before the urge takes over, then repeats the idea of meeting the trouble with kindness instead. There is no counting or tracking involved.

The difficult moment with food is not the eating itself.

It is the ten minutes before it, when a feeling rises that you do not want to meet, and the ten minutes after it, when the feeling is still there but now you are also judging yourself.

The day feels like a series of escapes from feelings that do not actually go away.

What’s in it

A steady, safe way to meet the hard moments without losing yourself in food, and a calmer, kinder peace with eating.

Why do it

When a difficult moment can be met with a breath and a little self compassion, the old pull loses its grip, so a few quiet minutes here builds steadiness from the inside.

Perhaps it feels like a tightness in your chest or a hollow ache deep inside your stomach

  • a steady and safe responsefocusing on reliability over urgency
  • one breath at a timesmall, manageable steps to build steadiness

Timeline: Start to Finish

The build repeats the act of meeting a hard feeling and staying put. Rehearsing this specific pause gives the mind a new shape to fall into when the pressure rises.

Why this works — and what the research actually says

Group-level, not session-level: no study has tested this exact session, and we will not pretend otherwise. Every source below was opened and read on 2026-08-25 before it was quoted.

Why do it as hypnosis?

Willpower is rarely what fails when the urge arrives. What fails is the lack of anything else to do with the feeling.

This session spends its time rehearsing a different move: it lets you meet the hard moment and stay in it, without needing to leave the room. It is a rehearsal of staying, not a lecture on stopping.

The closest study to what we actually sell — and it found nothing

Most hypnosis research studies a person in a room with a therapist. This one tested a 15-minute audio file, listened to nightly — which is almost exactly what a session here is.

Over three weeks the hypnosis group lost about two thirds of a kilogram and the placebo group lost none, and that gap was not statistically significant. Neither was the main thing the trial set out to measure.

  • 46 people, a 15-minute audio file nightly for three weeks
  • Hypnosis group −0.63 kg, placebo group 0.0 kg — not a significant difference
  • The trial's own primary outcome also came out null

Worth knowing: The authors are direct about why this is not the last word. "The study's low sample size is one of its most significant limitations."

And "based on the actual achieved sample size, the achieved power is 49%" — roughly a coin-flip chance of detecting a real effect even if one existed.

They also note COVID-era recruitment problems, a predominantly educated female sample, and that it "does not generalize to other forms of hypnosis".

The exact wording and figures

In a randomised, double-blinded controlled trial, 46 participants listened nightly for three weeks to either a 15-minute audio self-hypnosis file or a structurally identical placebo file.

Mean weight change was -0.63 ± 0.43 kg in the hypnosis group against 0.0 ± 1.5 kg in the control group (p = 0.148, not significant).

The primary outcome, progression through Transtheoretical Model stages, was also not significant (X²(2,46) = 1.909, p = 0.580).

Three ways to say it

The same steadying, whether you believe in changing your mind or just need to survive the afternoon.

Balanced

Meet the hard moments with a breath and self compassion, then find a calm, steady peace with food. The default.

Meets the urge with breath first, kindness second, leaving food as neutral.

Future self

Picture the version of you who stays steady and kind in hard moments and at ease with food.

The you who walks past the kitchen because the feeling is just a feeling now.

New identity

Step into being someone who stays steady and kind with themselves, with food as an ordinary friend, not an escape.

Someone whose first move to a hard moment is a hand on their chest, not the fridge.

Questions people ask about Binge Eating

Will this work if I've tried everything?

It asks nothing of your past failures—only that you notice the moment before the food and pause there.

Do I have to stop eating certain foods?

No. This is about meeting the feeling that drives the eating, not the food itself.

What if I do binge afterwards?

The session is still working if you notice the signal first—that gap is where the new path grows.

How is this different from mindful eating?

Mindfulness happens during eating; this happens before, at the first signal the feeling is rising.

Where it sits

Appetite, habit and body image, worked as behaviour rather than willpower.

Before you press play

  • This one asks for a bit of care. In the app it opens with a consent step before anything plays.

Hypnosis is not for everyone. If you have epilepsy, a psychotic illness, or you are under psychiatric care, talk to your clinician before using this — here or anywhere.
