Mood & Disposition

Hypnosis for loneliness

Reach out, and reach in.

Loneliness is a session for the gap between wanting company and the effort of making it happen. It settles the body and then spends its time rehearsing the sensation of being at home with yourself.

The later part of the recording moves gently toward the idea of a low-pressure message sent to someone else.

The room is quiet again and the phone does not feel like something you can pick up. You might think about calling someone, but the thought of what to say stops you before your hand moves.

It is not always the lack of people that weighs on you, but the feeling that you are on the outside of a door you cannot open.

What’s in it

A warmer sense of your own company and the ease to reach out in small, low-pressure ways.

Why do it

Connection grows from the inside out, so a few gentle minutes here softens the heaviness and opens the door a little wider.

What you’ll hear in the Loneliness session

The script names the real weight of wanting connection but finding the effort impossible, then begins to settle the body and soften that heaviness from the inside out before ever asking you to reach outward.

You notice that heavy gap, the space between wanting connection and feeling the effort it requires

That sense of loneliness is a real weight you carry, a quiet ache that settles deep within you

It is a feeling you know well, this isolation that can make the world seem distant and muted

Your body holds this tension, making the idea of reaching out feel like an impossible task

Yet, a part of you yearns for the warmth of company, for the simple ease of just being with another person, and that part is ready to be heard

This is a journey to soften that weight from the inside out, beginning right here, right now, with a deep and gentle breath that begins to settle your tired mind

Let your awareness drift down into your body, noticing the places where you hold that particular heavy feeling of being alone

  • You notice that heavy gapthe session starts with naming the problem plainly, not skipping over it
  • a deep and gentle breatha simple anchor to ground the session in the body
  • Let your awareness drift downa gentle shift from thinking to feeling — a technique used often

Timeline: Start to Finish

The standard build spends its middle minutes rehearsing the feeling of your own company, so that the heavy sense of it settles before you try to reach outward.

Why this works — and what the research actually says

Group-level, not session-level: no study has tested this exact session, and we will not pretend otherwise. Every source below was opened and read on 2026-08-25 before it was quoted.

Why do it as hypnosis?

Connection is hard to rehearse when you are already in the room and the pressure is on. Doing it here means the risk is removed, so you can spend time on the mechanics of reaching out without an audience.

It is not a chat and it does not ask anything of anyone else. It simply practises the motion of opening that door when nobody is watching.

Does gratitude practice actually work?

Yes, a little — and there is now a very large answer to that question. Researchers pooled 145 studies covering nearly 25,000 people in 28 countries.

Gratitude practice produced a small but consistent lift in wellbeing. A real nudge, not a transformation.

  • 145 studies, 24,804 people, 28 countries
  • A small, consistent improvement in wellbeing
  • Not better than other deliberately positive activities

Worth knowing: The same analysis found gratitude interventions were not significantly different from other positively valenced activities.

So the gain may come from deliberately doing something positive, rather than from gratitude specifically.

The authors also note the search covered English-language studies only, found some evidence of small-sample and selection bias, and is limited to the 28 countries included.

The exact wording and figures

Pooling 145 papers, 163 samples and 727 effect sizes from 24,804 participants across 28 countries, gratitude interventions produced a small overall increase in well-being (Hedges' g = 0.19, 95% CI 0.15 to 0.22, P < 0.001).

A meta-analysis pools the results of many separate studies to find the overall pattern, which is why the numbers are small and the sample is huge.

What happened when it was tested as an app

A 2025 trial put a three-week gratitude app in front of university students, with five daily exercises including a guided meditation. For the average student it changed nothing measurable.

For the students who started out struggling, it made a clear difference.

  • 93 students, three weeks, five daily exercises
  • Across everyone: no measurable effect
  • Among those who began with moderate-to-severe symptoms: a clear improvement

Worth knowing: The authors are direct about the limits. The study "had a small sample size with a relatively homogenous sample population". Also, "study dropout in the gratitude intervention group was relatively high".

And "there was no long-term follow-up on well-being outcomes after the intervention".

The exact wording and figures

In a randomised controlled trial of a three-week app-based gratitude programme with 93 university students, there was no significant effect across the full sample (Cohen d = 0.16, P = .46).

In the subsample who began with moderate-to-severe symptoms (n = 56), the intervention group improved significantly (Cohen d = -0.68, P = .04).

One trial, not a body of evidence — and it tested a gratitude app, not this session.

Three ways to say it

Same goal, written three ways: pick the voice you would actually believe when the phone is face down and the room is quiet again.

Balanced

Warm up your own company, set down the shame, and reach out in small, easy ways. The default.

Warms your own company first, sets down the shame, then practises the small motion of reaching out with zero pressure.

Future self

Picture the version of you who moves through the days warm, connected, and at ease.

Spends time with the version of you who picks up the phone without rehearsing the apology first.

New identity

Step into belonging now, at ease in your own company and welcome among others.

Steps into belonging now — at ease in your own room and welcome among others, without needing to earn it.

Questions people ask about Loneliness

Does this work if I don’t believe in hypnosis?

Hypnosis works by relaxing your body and letting your mind focus on suggestions. You don’t need to believe in it for that to happen—just listen and let it guide you.

What if I fall asleep during the session?

Drifting off is fine. The session is designed for relaxed listening. If you’re too tired, you can always play it again when you’re more alert.

How is this different from just talking to a friend?

This focuses on the feeling of being at home with yourself first, which can make reaching out to others feel less heavy. It’s not a chat—it’s practice.

Will this stop me feeling lonely?

It won’t stop loneliness, but it helps soften the weight and gently opens the door to small, low-pressure connections.

Where it sits

The baseline you live at day to day, rather than any single crisis.

Before you press play

  • This one asks for a bit of care. In the app it opens with a consent step before anything plays.

Hypnosis is not for everyone. If you have epilepsy, a psychotic illness, or you are under psychiatric care, talk to your clinician before using this — here or anywhere.
