Hypnosis for in-law stress
Related by marriage, not by obligation.
You do not get to pick your in-laws, but you can decide how much space they are allowed to take up inside your head.
This session mostly spends its time thinking about the room they will be in, and focusing on your breath whilst you are in it.
These visits often start days before they happen. You find yourself thinking about the last remark, or worrying about the next one, and the anticipation is often more tiring than the event itself.
Being in the same house becomes a job of work, leaving you tired before anyone has even arrived.
What’s in it
A version of you who can be in the room with them, pleasant and unbothered, without rehearsing it for a week first.
Why do it
You did not choose these people and you cannot leave them, so the only thing left to change is how much of you they get to occupy.

Perfect use-case: The In-Laws — hypnosis session
The mental rehearsal starts long before the car journey, the preparation taking up more space than the event itself.
What you’ll hear in the In-Laws session
The session creates a version of you who sits through family visits with a calm detachment, allowing their comments to pass by without sticking.
You are discovering a new way to exist within your extended family, one where you remain pleasant and completely unbothered without needing to rehearse it for a week beforehand
You did not choose these people, and you cannot simply leave them behind, so you are taking control now by changing how much of your mental space they are allowed to occupy
This shift begins deep inside your mind, where you can relax and let go of the old tension that used to tighten your chest before every visit
You are creating a version of yourself who sits on that sofa with a sense of calm detachment, watching the interactions flow around you like water around a stone
As you settle into this understanding, you can feel a deep sense of relief washing over you, because you realize that their comments and opinions no longer need to stick to you
- deep sense of reliefa familiar feeling is named to make the imagined calm more tangible
- watching the interactions flowyou are positioned as an observer, not a participant in the drama
- no longer need to stick to youthe problem is reframed from what they say to how it attaches
Timeline: Start to Finish
The middle section rehearses the state of being related by marriage without the weight of obligation. The build creates a clear sense of a boundary between you and the room.
3 of the 4 stages are named techniques with a published origin, credited under each.

Why this works — and what the research actually says
Group-level, not session-level: no study has tested this exact session, and we will not pretend otherwise. Every source below was opened and read on 2026-08-25 before it was quoted.
Why do it as hypnosis?
This specific relationship lacks the shared history that makes forgiveness easy, which is why the comments stick so hard.
Hypnosis works here because it rehearses a version of the visit where you are present but not pierced, running through the scene at a time when nobody is actually speaking.
It does not change who they are, but it changes the attention you give to the obligation.
What 20 years of meta-analyses actually found
Hypnosis as a whole has been studied a great deal. The strongest results are for pain and for people going through medical procedures, and the quality of the studies varies enormously. Some found large effects.
Some found nothing at all.
- 49 reviews, covering 261 separate randomised trials
- Strongest evidence: pain, and medical procedures
- Study quality is very uneven, and the authors say so
Worth knowing: The same overview rates only nine of those 49 meta-analyses as high methodological quality and 26 of them as critically low, and notes that 28 reported nothing at all about safety.
It is the best map of the field that exists, and it says the field is uneven.
The exact wording and figures
A 2024 overview pooled 49 meta-analyses covering 261 separate randomised controlled trials of hypnosis. Effects ran from d = -0.04 to d = 2.72, and just under two-thirds of the reported effects reached significance.
The strongest evidence was for people undergoing medical procedures and for pain.
An overview of reviews, which is a study of other studies rather than new patients. Useful because it is the widest honest view of where hypnosis has evidence and where it does not.
Three ways to say it
Pick the voice that feels most like the version of you you want to become in that room.
Balanced
Related by marriage, not by obligation. The default.
A way to be in the room politely and pleasantly, without the event taking over your week.
Future self
Picture the version of you who is someone easy around their in-laws.
Picture the you who can sit on the sofa and actually hear the conversation, not just your own anxieties.
New identity
Step into being someone easy around their in-laws, starting now.
Step into being the person who is related by marriage, not by obligation, starting immediately.
Questions people ask about The In-Laws
Do I have to believe in hypnosis for this to work?
No. The session is made to help you relax and focus. It works by guiding your attention, not by requiring belief.
What if I fall asleep during the session?
Drifting off is fine. The session is designed for relaxed listening. You can always replay it when more alert.
How is this different from just trying to calm myself down?
It guides your focus and helps you rehearse being calm in the specific situation, rather than just hoping you’ll feel calm.
Will this stop me from feeling annoyed with my in-laws?
It doesn’t stop feelings, but it helps you focus on your breath and the room, which can make the feelings less overwhelming.
Where it sits
Other people: the ones you keep, the ones you lost, the ones you avoid.
Before you press play
Hypnosis is not for everyone. If you have epilepsy, a psychotic illness, or you are under psychiatric care, talk to your clinician before using this — here or anywhere.
