Trauma & Past

Hypnosis for PTSD grounding

Return to the present body when triggered.

PTSD Grounding is a session for when the present moment vanishes and something old takes its place. It spends the entire time rehearsing a quick return to the room, using the floor and breath as a fixed point.

The aim is to make that return familiar before it is needed.

The sensation arrives before you even know the word for it, a sudden drop in the stomach or a rush of heat that makes no sense in a quiet room.

Something in the present moment looks like the past for a second, and the body reacts as if the danger were here and now rather than a memory.

It is exhausting to be pulled so violently away from the actual day by something that is already over.

What’s in it

A portable grounding anchor that brings you back to the present body the moment something old stirs.

Why do it

Rehearsing the way back to here and now means your body already knows the path when you feel activated. Supports you alongside trauma therapy, never instead.

Perfect use-case: PTSD Grounding — hypnosis session

The present moment vanishes the instant something in the room looks like the past.

A sudden car backfireheart racing before the sound ends
The supermarket aislelights too bright and loud
Tuesday morningalready exhausted before the day starts

What you’ll hear in the PTSD Grounding session

The script directs attention to the simple, solid facts of the moment, such as the surface beneath you, the ground, and the sounds of the room. These five quiet facts serve as a reminder that you are here.

you are becoming someone who can return to the safe, solid present whenever you choose

And let your attention come gently to the simple, solid facts of this moment

the ones that are here

feel the surface beneath you

the chair or the bed or the floor

holding your full weight

so you have nothing to hold up

it is already holding you

And let your awareness travel down

feel where they meet the ground

the warm pressure of being supported

and up through both legs

resting exactly where they are

feel the air against your skin

the temperature of the room

And the sounds that are here with you

a distant voice

the small sounds of an ordinary, safe place

you may simply let them come and go

and your own breath

five quiet facts of the present

each one telling you the same thing

  • holding your full weightremoves the need to hold yourself up, signalling physical safety to the body
  • the simple, solid facts of this momentdirects focus away from internal memories and onto external, verifiable inputs
  • you are becoming someone who can returnframes the skill as a shift in identity rather than a task to remember

Timeline: Start to Finish

The body scan is the main mechanism here. It spends a long time feeling the feet on the floor to build a specific sense of weight and place that you can call on later.

Why this works — and what the research actually says

Group-level, not session-level: no study has tested this exact session, and we will not pretend otherwise. Every source below was opened and read on 2026-08-25 before it was quoted.

Why do it as hypnosis?

Trying to reason with a nervous system in that state does not work because the part of you that needs to settle is not the part that can think.

The practice here is physical rather than mental: time is spent feeling the support of the chair, hearing the sounds of the room, and locating the body in the present.

It repeats the act of returning until the route back to the here and now is a well-worn path.

Grief: what the research does not say

Worth knowing: There is no meta-analysis of hypnosis for grief. What exists is case reports.

We are showing you the evidence for grief work in general precisely because the evidence for this session's method specifically does not exist yet.

The exact wording and figures

A systematic review of grief interventions across 12 randomised controlled trials found they reduce grief symptoms from before to after, but were more effective than control treatments in only just over half of those trials.

The review does not examine hypnosis at all.

Three ways to say it

Choose the voice that makes the present feel like a place you can actually stay in.

Balanced

A warm, all-round session that orients you to the present body and builds a portable anchor for when you feel activated. The default.

A steady orientation to the room that builds a reliable path back for when you need it most.

Future self

Meet the you ahead who stays anchored in the present, finding the way back to here and now with quiet ease.

Meet the version of you who already knows the way back to safety without thinking.

New identity

Step into being someone grounded in the safe present now, able to find the floor and the breath whenever you choose.

Step into the role of someone whose body knows the floor is there before the mind checks.

Questions people ask about PTSD Grounding

Will this stop flashbacks?

No. This session builds a route back to the present; it does not prevent the past from arriving.

Can I use this during a flashback?

It is designed to help you return, but if you are severely dissociated, wait until you can focus on the voice.

Do I need to close my eyes?

It helps, but you can listen with eyes open if keeping them closed feels unsafe.

Is this a replacement for therapy?

No. This supports the work you do with a professional; it is not a treatment on its own.

Where it sits

Old material, approached slowly and with a safe place built in first.

Before you press play

  • This one asks for a bit of care. In the app it opens with a consent step before anything plays.
  • Not the right session right now if any of these are live for you: active thoughts of suicide or self-harm.
  • A Personal Sanctuary block is added automatically before the suggestion, so there is somewhere stable to be first.

Hypnosis is not for everyone. If you have epilepsy, a psychotic illness, or you are under psychiatric care, talk to your clinician before using this — here or anywhere.
