Hypnosis for difficult family gatherings
Go, stay yourself, come home intact.
This session prepares you for the hours when old habits return, rehearsing the visit while you are still on your own so you can stay an adult in the room.
It spends its time separating the past from the present and keeping your temper steady throughout the day. You listen before you go.
The trouble is often not the afternoon itself, but the feeling of shrinking back into a teenager the moment the front door closes.
You walk in as an adult and somehow leave as a child, listening to a tone of voice you have heard for decades. It is a repeat of old patterns where your own warmth gets lost and your temper shortens.
What’s in it
A visit you get through as an adult rather than as your fifteen-year-old self, with your temper and your warmth both intact.
Why do it
Families are practised at old roles, and rehearsing the new one is how you stop being cast in the old.

Timeline: Start to Finish
The build goes in with you and stays there the whole time. It runs the entire visit as a rehearsal so that you have practised being the adult in the chair before you arrive.
3 of the 4 stages are named techniques with a published origin, credited under each.

Three ways to say it
The same goal, written three ways. You pick the one that sounds like something you would believe — and you can hear a different one tomorrow without rebuilding anything.
Balanced
Go, stay yourself, come home intact. The default.
Future self
Meet the version of you who is steady and adult among your own family.
New identity
Step into being steady and adult among your own family, starting now.
Where it sits
Other people: the ones you keep, the ones you lost, the ones you avoid.
Before you press play
- This one asks for a bit of care. In the app it opens with a consent step before anything plays.
- Not the right session right now if any of these are live for you: ongoing abuse or coercion within the family.
Hypnosis is not for everyone. If you have epilepsy, a psychotic illness, or you are under psychiatric care, talk to your clinician before using this — here or anywhere.
Why this works — and what the research actually says
Group-level, not session-level: no study has tested this exact session, and we will not pretend otherwise. Every source below was opened and read on 2026-08-25 before it was quoted.
Why do it as hypnosis?
You cannot change who they are, and you cannot change the history in the room. What you can do is rehearse keeping your own shape while you are in it.
This session spends its time on that separation, practising the version of you who stays intact. It is not a conversation with them; it is a rehearsal of you walking in and walking out still yourself.
What 20 years of meta-analyses actually found
Hypnosis as a whole has been studied a great deal. The strongest results are for pain and for people going through medical procedures, and the quality of the studies varies enormously. Some found large effects.
Some found nothing at all.
- 49 reviews, covering 261 separate randomised trials
- Strongest evidence: pain, and medical procedures
- Study quality is very uneven, and the authors say so
Worth knowing: The same overview rates only nine of those 49 meta-analyses as high methodological quality and 26 of them as critically low, and notes that 28 reported nothing at all about safety.
It is the best map of the field that exists, and it says the field is uneven.
The exact wording and figures
A 2024 overview pooled 49 meta-analyses covering 261 separate randomised controlled trials of hypnosis. Effects ran from d = -0.04 to d = 2.72, and just under two-thirds of the reported effects reached significance.
The strongest evidence was for people undergoing medical procedures and for pain.
An overview of reviews, which is a study of other studies rather than new patients. Useful because it is the widest honest view of where hypnosis has evidence and where it does not.
